About Live Exchange Rates

Exchange rates change continuously during trading hours as currencies are bought and sold on the global foreign exchange market. The rates shown here are the European Central Bank's official reference rates, published each business day. They represent a snapshot of the market at the close of the European trading session and are widely used as a neutral, institutional reference point.

For travel, freelance invoicing, or rough financial planning, ECB rates are accurate enough for any practical calculation. For actual money transfers, your bank or a service like Wise, Revolut, or Western Union will quote a slightly different rate that includes their spread — typically 0.5%–3% above the mid-market rate.

The 7-day sparkline shows recent direction at a glance. A rising line means your "from" currency has been strengthening against your "to" currency — you'd get more of the target currency per unit over time. A falling line means the opposite.

Common Currency Conversions

The most frequently converted currency pairs are USD/EUR (US Dollar to Euro), USD/GBP (US Dollar to British Pound), EUR/GBP (Euro to Pound), and USD/JPY (US Dollar to Japanese Yen). These four pairs account for the majority of global foreign exchange volume.

Emerging market conversions — USD/INR (India), USD/BRL (Brazil), USD/MXN (Mexico), USD/ZAR (South Africa), USD/TRY (Turkey) — are also supported. These currencies tend to have higher day-to-day volatility than major pairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often are the exchange rates updated?

Rates come from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the Frankfurter API and are updated every business day at around 16:00 CET. Weekend and public holiday rates are not published — the most recent business day rate is shown instead.

Which currencies are supported?

The tool supports all 30+ currencies published daily by the European Central Bank, including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, CAD, AUD, CNY, INR, KRW, BRL, MXN, SEK, NOK, DKK, PLN, CZK, HUF, RON, BGN, HKD, SGD, NZD, ZAR, TRY, MYR, PHP, THB, ISK, IDR, and ILS.

Are the rates suitable for financial transactions?

The rates are reference rates from the European Central Bank — the same data used by most financial reference tools and analytics platforms. They are accurate for informational purposes but are not live interbank rates. Actual transaction rates from banks and money transfer services will differ due to spreads and fees. Always use your bank's or transfer service's quoted rate for real transactions.

What does the 7-day trend chart show?

The sparkline shows how the exchange rate between your two selected currencies has moved over the past 7 calendar days (excluding weekends). It gives you a quick sense of direction — whether the rate has been rising, falling, or stable. The low and high values for the period are shown below the chart.

Why is EUR always the base currency internally?

The ECB publishes all rates as EUR cross-rates. The tool uses EUR as the internal pivot to convert between any two currencies: it converts your "from" currency to EUR, then from EUR to your "to" currency. This gives the same result as a direct rate and allows any currency pair combination from a single API call.

Does this tool track or store my conversions?

No. All processing happens in your browser. The only network requests are to the Frankfurter API to fetch current and historical rates. No data about your conversions, amounts, or usage is sent anywhere.

What is the Frankfurter API?

Frankfurter (frankfurter.dev) is a free, open-source currency exchange rate API that sources data from the European Central Bank. It has no authentication requirement, no rate limits, and confirmed CORS support — which means it can be called directly from a browser without a server proxy. Historical rates go back to 1999.

How do I convert a large amount like a mortgage or salary?

Just enter the amount in the Amount field — the tool handles any value. For example, to convert a $500,000 USD home price to EUR, enter 500000 in the amount field with USD selected as the source currency.
